Some very useful suggestions and examples on how to create tone and mood, and how it improves our chances of engaging the reader. There is nothing worse than a good story told in a boring way. Thanks so much for sharing these pointers with us.

Thanks Ginda for your comment. Yes, the curse of the bland and safe delivery of a story is something I have seen a good few times. And frankly, I’d rather read a story that is a little raw around the edges, but more engaging for it, than something that is simply satisfactory.

Thanks Albe. Yes, both of those pieces are really compelling from the start and you just can’t avoid wanting to read on, which is kind of the point of writing stories, as George Saunders says, to get the reader to read the next sentence and then the next.
